Getting number plate cancelled? This will change from 1 August 2025

From 1 August 2025, you can no longer have your number plate cancelled via bpost for free. From then on, anyone who sells their car or wants it deregistered will have to deliver the plate directly to the DIV themselves or pay extra.

What will change?

Until now, you could just drop by a bpost counter to have your plate cancelled. That possibility will disappear completely. From 1 August, there will only be three ways to have your plate officially cancelled:

1. Send to DIV yourself

You can send your plate by post to DIV - 1212 Brussels. Pack it well in a sturdy envelope or box. You may fold the plate in half (do not cut it!) so that it fits into an ordinary A4 envelope. Make sure you have sufficient postage, as insufficiently stamped items will be refused.

👉 The deletion will take place on the day the DIV opens your shipment. So be sure to send your record at least a week before the end of the month if you want it to be deleted that same month.

2.Self-delivery in Brussels

You can also drop off your plate at the FPS Mobility, at Vooruitgangstraat 56, 1210 Brussels. There are collection boxes in the entrance hall and at the counter where you can easily deposit them. The box in the entrance hall is open every working day from 8.30 am to 6 pm. The box at the counter follows the opening hours of the DIV.

⚠️ Please note that you can no longer bring in records at other DIV offices. These will not be processed.

3. New bpost service (paying)

Would you rather bring in your record at a post office? That is still possible, via a new paying service by bpost.

You hand in your unpacked plate at the post office. bpost checks whether it is an official plate, packs it itself and delivers it to the DIV the next working day. You will also receive an official deposit slip as proof of deletion.

💶 Cost of this service: 17.99 euros

A handy solution if you don't want to pack or ship, and still want a paper proof.

Did you know that you can also keep your plate?

If you buy another car soon (of the same category), you don't have to delete your current plate. You have four months to re-register your new vehicle on the same number plate.

This is often the smartest choice:

  • You avoid the cost of a new plate as well as deletion

  • You do not have to send or bring anything in

  • You save time: we take care of the registration of your new car

  • And you help the environment: less waste, less transport

Feel free to contact us if you are switching to another vehicle. Together, we will see if you can simply reuse your existing plate.
