Your health insurance (legally required insurance through your mutual insurance company) also protects you while traveling. But it does not apply everywhere in the world and only covers your medical expenses to a certain extent. Therefore, travel insurance is one of the most important things on your checklist when planning a trip .

The basis of any travel insurance is travel assistance. It helps you when you get sick while traveling, have an accident or car trouble. Depending on your exact policy, travel insurance also intervenes in other situations.

For example:

  • unexpected additional travel expenses, e.g. you get into an accident while traveling and have to return early.

  • cancellation fees or replacement travel, e.g. you lose your job and can no longer afford the trip, or have to postpone the trip due to a death in your family.

  • costs due to stolen or damaged luggage, e.g. your suitcase does not arrive at your destination, or your tablet is stolen from your hotel room.

  • costs for legal assistance in travel disputes, e.g. discussion with the tour operator or law enforcement agencies abroad.

You can purchase travel insurance up to the day before you leave on vacation. Be sure to double check that your policy lists all the names of your travel companions. As well as your license plate, if you are traveling by car.
